What Is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?

Waist-to-hip ratio, often shortened to WHR, compares the circumference of your waist with the circumference of your hips. It is a simple measure of body fat distribution. A higher number means your waist is larger in relation to your hips, which may suggest more weight is carried around the abdomen.

WHR is not the same as body weight, body mass index (BMI), or body fat percentage. BMI compares weight with height, while WHR focuses on where body size is distributed. That is why a BMI and waist-to-hip ratio calculator can give two different but complementary pieces of information.

How to Measure Your Waist and Hips Correctly

The calculation is easy, but tape placement can change the result. For consistent measurements, use a flexible, stretch-resistant tape and follow the same method every time.

Step 1: Measure your waist

  1. Stand upright with your feet together and your abdomen relaxed.
  2. Find the midpoint between the bottom of your last palpable rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest).
  3. Wrap the tape around that point, keeping it horizontal and snug without pressing into the skin.
  4. Take the measurement after a normal breath out.

Step 2: Measure your hips

  1. Keep standing naturally with your feet together.
  2. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
  3. Check in a mirror that the tape is level and parallel to the floor.
  4. Record the number without pulling the tape tight.

Measurement tip: Take each measurement twice. If the readings differ, repeat them and use the average of the two closest values. Use the same placement method when tracking change.

How to Calculate Waist-to-Hip Ratio

To calculate waist-to-hip ratio, divide your waist circumference by your hip circumference. The result has no unit because the inches or centimeters cancel out.

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference

Example using inches

If your waist is 32 inches and your hips are 40 inches:

32 ÷ 40= 0.80 WHR

Example using centimeters

If your waist is 81 cm and your hips are 102 cm:

81 ÷ 102= 0.79 WHR

You do not need to convert centimeters to inches. A waist-to-hip ratio calculator in cm and a calculator in inches return the same number when both inputs use the same unit.

How to calculate hip-to-waist ratio

A hip-to-waist ratio calculator reverses the equation: hips ÷ waist. For a 40-inch hip and 32-inch waist, the hip-to-waist ratio is 1.25. That is mathematically correct, but health reference cutoffs are normally written as waist divided by hips. Our results show both values and label them clearly.

WHO-based adult screening commonly uses a waist-to-hip ratio above 0.85 for women and above 0.90 for men as an indicator of abdominal obesity. These are general public-health cutoffs—not a diagnosis and not a complete cardiovascular risk score.

A result above the cutoff suggests a greater concentration of size around the waist relative to the hips. It does not tell you how much visceral fat you have, and it does not account for every factor that affects health. Age, ethnicity, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking, fitness, family history, medications, and existing health conditions also matter.

There is no single “perfect” WHR

Use the chart as screening context rather than a score to chase. A smaller number is not automatically better, and changing your hips or waist solely to reach an appearance target is not a medical recommendation.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio for Women vs. Men

The formula is identical for women and men: waist ÷ hips. The difference is the commonly used adult cutoff. A female waist-to-hip ratio calculator compares the result with 0.85, while a male waist-to-hip ratio calculator commonly uses 0.90.

What does a 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio mean?

A WHR of 0.70 is below the general adult cutoff for both women and men. The number is also widely mentioned in discussions about female attractiveness and an “hourglass” body shape. Those ideas come from appearance research and cultural preferences; they are not universal, they vary between people and populations, and they should not be treated as a medical ideal. This calculator does not score attractiveness.

What does a 0.8 waist-to-hip ratio mean?

A WHR of 0.80 is below the general adult cutoffs for both sexes. It still needs context: the same ratio can come from very different waist and hip measurements. Waist circumference, height, BMI, health history, and metabolic markers may change the overall picture.

Body shape, hourglass, and bust measurements

Some searches combine bust, waist, and hips to describe clothing fit or body shape. That is a different goal from health screening. A bust-to-waist-to-hip ratio calculator may describe proportions, but bust size is not part of the WHO waist-to-hip health formula. For that reason, this tool only uses waist and hip measurements.

When Waist-to-Hip Ratio May Be Less Useful

WHR is inexpensive and easy to repeat, but measurement error and individual differences matter. Results may be less reliable or need professional interpretation in these situations:

  • Pregnancy: normal changes in the abdomen make standard adult cutoffs inappropriate.
  • Children and teenagers: growth and puberty require age-specific assessment.
  • Recent surgery, swelling, ascites, or a large abdominal mass: waist size may not represent usual fat distribution.
  • Very muscular builds: circumference cannot distinguish muscle from fat.
  • Inconsistent tape placement: moving the tape by a few centimeters can change WHR.
  • Different ethnic backgrounds: the relationship between body measurements and metabolic risk can vary.
