How to Calculate Fat-Burning Heart Rate

The calculation starts with maximum heart rate (HRmax). This page uses the Tanaka equation by default:

Next, multiply HRmax by 0.60 and 0.70. For a 40-year-old, estimated HRmax is 180 bpm. The simple Zone 2 estimate is therefore 108–126 bpm.

These percentages are a practical convention. They estimate a sustainable aerobic range; they do not directly measure the intensity where an individual burns the most fat.

Karvonen Method and Heart Rate Reserve

The Karvonen method includes resting heart rate. It first calculates heart rate reserve (HRR), the difference between maximum and resting heart rate.

For age 40 with a resting pulse of 65 bpm, HRmax is 180 and HRR is 115. At 60%–70% of HRR, the result is about 134–146 bpm. This is higher than 60%–70% of HRmax because the resting pulse is added back.

Do not mix the two percentage scales. “70% of maximum heart rate” and “70% of heart rate reserve” are different calculations. This page labels the selected method beside every result.

What Does the “Fat-Burning Zone” Mean?

During lower-intensity aerobic work, the body often gets a larger share of its energy from fat. As intensity rises, carbohydrate use usually increases. This is why Zone 2 is often called the fat-burning zone.

But a higher percentage of energy from fat does not always mean more fat or calories burned in total. Harder exercise uses more energy per minute, while easier exercise can usually be continued longer. Both can support fitness and weight management.

For long-term fat loss, total activity, food intake, sleep, resistance training, and consistency matter more than staying inside one narrow BPM range. The TDEE calculator can help explain the separate energy-balance side of that goal.

How Accurate Is a Fat-Burning Zone Calculator?

It is an estimate. Tanaka and other age equations describe population averages. A person's actual maximum heart rate may be 15–20 bpm above or below an age estimate. A measured HRmax from an appropriate exercise test is more personal, but it still does not directly measure Fatmax.

A small 2023 study comparing predicted zones with laboratory-measured peak fat oxidation found poor agreement and an average difference of 23 bpm. That does not make the calculator useless. It means the result should guide training, not act as a biological measurement.

  • More useful for: setting a starting range for steady aerobic exercise.
  • Less reliable with: beta blockers, rhythm problems, pregnancy, illness, dehydration, heat, or poorly fitted wrist sensors.
  • Most specific option: cardiopulmonary or metabolic exercise testing that measures oxygen use and fuel oxidation.

Fat-Burning Heart Rate by Age, Sex, and Weight

Age changes the estimate because predicted maximum heart rate generally declines over time. Sex and weight are common search terms, but neither is part of the Tanaka or Karvonen zone formula used here.

Women and men can use the same calculator. Individual fitness, medication, health status, measured HRmax, and exercise response often explain more practical variation than a gender toggle.

How to Use Your Target Range

  1. Start near the lower end. Warm up for 5–10 minutes and increase effort gradually.
  2. Check the talk test. At moderate intensity, you should usually be able to speak in full sentences, though singing would be difficult.
  3. Confirm the reading. A chest strap often responds faster than a wrist watch. You can also count your pulse for 30 seconds and multiply by two.
  4. Watch the trend. Do not chase one exact beat. Heart rate drifts with heat, hills, fatigue, hydration, and stress.
  5. Stop for warning symptoms. Chest pressure, faintness, severe breathlessness, or a new irregular rhythm needs medical attention.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week for adults, plus muscle-strengthening activity. Your safe starting point may differ.

How do I calculate my fat-burning heart rate?

Estimate HRmax with 208 − (0.7 × age), then multiply by 0.60 and 0.70 for a common simple Zone 2 range. If you know resting heart rate, select the HRR method for a Karvonen result.

What heart rate burns the most fat?

No single age formula can identify your personal peak fat-oxidation heart rate. A 60%–70% HRmax zone is a useful training estimate. Laboratory metabolic testing is more specific.

Is Zone 2 best for losing body fat?

Zone 2 is sustainable and can add meaningful weekly activity. It is not a shortcut. Body-fat change depends on total energy balance, training, diet, sleep, and consistency.

Is the calculator different for women and men?

No. The Tanaka equation used here applies to healthy adult women and men. Sex and weight are not inputs in the formula.

Can I use this calculator while taking beta blockers?

Age-based targets may be misleading because beta blockers lower heart rate response. Ask the prescribing clinician for a suitable target and use perceived effort or the talk test as advised.
